Concept

It was many, many years ago when a younger Morty Grim first drove his car out into the world’s roads. Back in those days there were plenty of men in his profession. They were guys who would traverse the land on a dedicated mission, who were driven by a deep and profound sense of duty. Most came from different backgrounds, places, and companies, but they all had the same goal… the sale.

In the modern flux of day-to-day commerce, the traveling salesman is a thing of the past. Even the companies that once ruled the domestic brand wars of the door to door era have crumbled. The thick heavy black suitcases full of shoe polish, brushes, and soap, (the salesman’s armory) are no longer made. The convenience stores have taken all of the old trade away. And yet after all this turmoil, a now much older Mortimer Grim lugs around a black case full of everyday things across the highways of the world looking for customers.

Now pushing into his late 50s, Mortimer Grim is a dapper man with his hair cut just so, his fingernails well trimmed, and his old suit is just as pressed as the day it was bought. His clothes, hair style, and demeanor hails from a time just after the second world war, which would make him seem to young, but if you ask him his age he’ll say that a gentlemen never tells. The wares in his suitcase run the gambit, from small metal succors, and sewing kits, to LAN cables and cell phone minutes. Everything he sells is affordably priced with many at their 1940's era cost. He drives in a black car with printing on one side, which proudly proclaims “Wattman’s Five and Dime Supplies.” The last thing to say, is to tell of the extraordinary way that Mortimer Grim plies his trade, for he only gives customers what they need on any given day. Sometimes he’ll sell you something mundane, like gum or a lighter, but his premium stock is full of wondrous items. In the seemingly small space of his car’s trunk glorious treasures are kept. Though you can’t see all that is in there at once, it seems the trunk has unlimited space. From it have emerged things like mythical shields, helmets, katanas, and relics of magical yield. Richard the Lionhart’s sword, Sun Tzu’s notebook, a ray gun from space, one of Merlin’s spells, and even the severed, preserved remains of Jesse James’ hand, have been pulled from the back of Grim’s car. Though shocked as one may be of this supernatural store, Mortimer never pays it any mind, he just sells what he’s picked up in his travels and passes the savings on to you.

Abilities and Possesions

  • Insight – Mortimer has an knack for giving people what they want, and choosing out items that the customers are in need of. It is a supernatural insight into what a person is longing for or will require to face an upcoming challenge. But to sum up, he rarely sells useless items to people.
  • Black Case – The suitcase Mortimer totes around is about 3’ long, 1 ½’ wide, and 2’ deep. It has four folding legs bolted to it’s bottom, and can be set up as a stand. Numerous drawers, boxes, and pockets holds all the shoestrings, combs, breath mints, and pens in. Painted in on the top, in white letters is “Wattman’s.”
  • Car – The company car Mortimer drives is an early 1960 era sedan with white printing on one side. The dark interior is meticulously kept. Otherwise the vehicle is pretty non-descript.
  • Premium Stock – The trunk of Mortimer’s car is a space of endless possibilities. When some one has gained his trust, Grim allows them to buy from the premium selection. When the trunk is opened it is cluttered with knick-knacks and assorted miscellanea. And in addition to that 3 items of stupendous historical or mythic significance. It can be from any time period (even some sci-fi future stuffs) and is always impressive. Also the three items are always what the costumer “needs” that is the selection is tailored to the eye of the beholder and only what they will require and desire.
  • Reliquary – This catchall for his ability to summon items from anytime period (including with a 50 or so jump, the future) and/or any human culture. This power is limited in few ways; firstly he can not call on this power for himself, he is a business man and the premium stock is only for customers; Secondly the items must be drawn from his car’s trunk and must be able to be conceivablely fit in a trunk (so no hovercar engines or medieval lances) anything 5’ by 3’ by 3’ or so is game; Lastly each person only access to three items and cannot select to buy items that were presented to other characters.
