Summary

In other cultures, Bo might have been revered as a warrior or athlete, but as he had the misfortune to be born in the Rat Lands, he is condemned to the lowest rung of slaves, the Tools. Tools are lobotomized and drugged to remove aggression, ego, and some higher brain functions and then used purely for easily controlled manual labor. Humans that are physically fit but score poorly on mental aptitude tests are typically made into Tools, but the stadard is highly inconsistant. Often the procedure is used as a threat against slaves who try to cause trouble, and sometimes the threat is even carried out. Bo can vaguely remember a time when he was smarter. It involved a lot of yelling. He's happier now.

Bo does have some intelligence and skill to him. He is an excellent chef, for instance. Ironically though, tools make very poor fighters unless closely supervised. Their violent instincts are removed-- think A Clockwork Orange. Their rat master must control almost their every move directly in order to use them in a fight, which depending on the skill of the rat can be very awkward.
